Korg Monotron, Kaossilator, and iMS20 app for iPad

This is a bit from a day long jam session when Kevin and Mary. Kevin brought over a fretless bass and iPad with the Korg iMS20 application on it. We plugged in the iPad, my Kaossilator, and the (squeaky always out of tune) Monotron and jammed for the afternoon/evening.

I came away with 3, 25-30 minute long jam recordings. I spent time last night breaking them into 4 separate tracks.

1 is 3:29
2 is 1:22
3 is 9:39
and 4 is 25:18 (nice and long).

I’m putting up track 1 here. Tell me what you think! I think we’re getting better at this stuff. I particularly find myself listening to a lot of this stuff ON PURPOSE!!! (Imagine that shit!) It’s actually enjoyable.

Check it out. Track 1 from the Kevin/Mary/Cemego day!

It is NOT ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AT ONCE (for instance, the monotron didn’t make it into this one) but the other 3 tracks are definitely worthwhile. I’ll put them in the mp3volumes as soon as I’m settled with them. If you cant wait to hear them, either visit me or make a special request and you can get them off the FTP.

For some stupid reason I’m really proud of the noises that have been coming out of my house.

Here’s images and links to the stuff we used to make this noise. Click the image for a link to the site for each “toy”.

UPDATED WORDPRESS TODAY! Testing a New MP3 Player plug-in!

Rundgren Todd-Surf Talks

To simply create a player for a track you upload to the media library:

  1. Decide on the mp3 you wish to upload.
  2. On the sidebar, click Media.
  3. Click Add New.
  4. Upload the mp3 from your computer to the media libary.  NOTE:  The mp3 must be under 8 megs or 8,000 k.
  5. VERY IMPORTANT: After it uploads, MAKE NOTE OF FILE NAME. The uploader WILL change the filename. You want to make a note of how it changed (Ctrl-C – copy it somewhere).  Here’s an example of what it did to me:  The file on my hard drive is named as follows:TV Toons-Rockford Files.mp3The filename you must call is listed on this screen as (notice the location of the dashes):TV-Toons-Rockford-Files.mp3
  6. Create your new post to hold the player.  Using the song above I will enter the text WITHOUT QUOTES (but definitely with the brackets) into the HTML editor:

TA DAAAAH!  It’s that easy (somewhat).

TV Toons-Rockford Files

Here’s the same thing but in a nifty “customizable” player.

The code for that looks like this:

This plug in will allow you to create customizable playlists (provided all your media is uploaded), adjust volume, and a bunch of other neato things.  I just think it’s nice to actually play something from the blog rather than have people download it to play it.

Here’s the link for the instructions

Here’s a playback link to WMOM.

The code for that looks like this:

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass Psychadelia – Dust Off Your Balance Knob

Trippy Herb
Trip out with Herb Alpert mannnn

I have remixed Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass’s-Green Leaves of Summer.

I had a mix of it recorded backwards that I was enjoying and Will recommended that I have it playing backwards and forwards at the same time.

I took the extra step and put the backwards recording in the left speaker and the forwards recording in the right speaker.  That way you can enjoy them both or separate.

Quando, Quando, Quando.

I really love WMOM. Not because its a family member’s station, but because it keeps alive those things in life that just should not be forgotten.

One of these gems is Engelbert Humperdinck. Once an idol, and now a shit list favorite. Growing up, he made my granny’s (in the words of Jerri Blank) as “moist as a snack cake down there.” She would play his record all the time…Today is Englebert’s birthday and I want to give a shout out to all those grannies in the world whom during the driest part of their years, could still bring on the showers for some hot Engelbert Humperdinck meat. HA!

HELLO my geeky, radio, shortwave, internet, audio, gadget, computer and electronics friends!!!

Hello my friends in geekdom,

This was really crazy but I stumbled over this article:

http://www.archive.org/details/ird059

and it really “freaked me out” (because I’ve heard these sounds before.  A lot of it!  In some very interesting musical contexts).  I’ve never known about this, but there is this thing called “Numbers Stations” that are broadcast on shortwave radio as a way to communicate to international spies and stuff.  Thankfully, somebody has collected and posted some of this stuff to the Internet. I listened to some of the samples and I recognized sounds that were used in various recordings of music that I enjoy such as obscure stuff like ChromaKey, Brian Eno, etc.. As we all know my taste in music is poop anyway, but I’m curious if any of it sounds familiar to any of you? I just thought this was interesting, and I know I have super geeky friends out there that would find this “neato” as well.

I hope for comments here. You don’t need to be a member to comment on the article.  I wont Spam you or track you down on Facebook (as I refuse to have one).

I want any opinions on it for example:  “yeah! know all about this”, or “Chad why don’t you find something to do”, or “… of course i knew this you idiot”.

NOTE: you may not use any of the above comments.

Cheers and stuff,

Some Music Died January 4, 2011

One of the best bass players EVER to grace modern music passed away on Jan 4. Mick Karn. (Also see his profile on All Music Guide).

Mick Karn 1

He was the bass player for Japan, Rain Tree Crow, Dali’s Car, Gary Numan & Tubeway Army, No-Man and many others. I’m particularly fond of an album he did with Yoshihiro Hanno in 2000 called Liquid Glass. If you haven’t heard me play it once in a while, you probably aren’t listening. Mick Karn was heralded throughout music, even in the standard jazz genre’s as one of the best bass players around. He was also proficient with very odd (to my liking) implementation of woodwinds in rock music. He was very good at clarinet and bassoon. He used them a lot in the music he made in the 90’s with Jansen/Barbieri/Karn (or JBK) which was the instrumentalists from the band Japan.

Nobody sounds like this guy playing bass… NOBODY. If you don’t believe the power of this, try you tube’ing his name and look at all the people trying to play his bass lines.

This video is actually fun to watch and listen to. You can really hear the quality in the sound Mick Karn was driving at. Listen to this guy try to teach a Mick Karn bass line. He’s doing “Cantonese Boy” from Japan. Just the sound of the fretless bass played in this fashion gives me freakin goose bumps.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m gonna miss Mick Karn.

Here’s another good write up on him.

My Fixation On Japanese Techno Pop AKA Nippop Brings Me Happiness in Dark Times

Well, as you all know I’ve been incredibly sick.  Haven’t had a flu/bug like this in a long time.  Add to the fact that my boss has been calling me everyday and every night even on weekends about work crap (and I cant bill for the time he harasses me), I needed to stumble over some music that made me feel good.

It’s times like this I need to find me some music I like.  So I was combing YouTube for videos.  Some of you may know, in the past year I have developed this taste for Japanese pop music courtesy of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Human Audio Sponge/Sketch Show.  There’s a spin off from these bands from the drummer/vocalist Yukihiro Takahashi that I’ve fallen in love with called Pupa.

Pupa-Floating Pupa
Debut album from Pupa called "Floating Pupa"

If any of you have been in the car with me this summer, you have inevitably heard some of this stuff.  Well, I have been overjoyed to find that they have put out a follow up album called “Dreaming”.  The title track (which I’ve instantly fallen in love with) has a video.  Here it is:

What I have found charming about this band is that there are so many instruments at play.  Further research on YouTube of their live concerts shows them up on stage with so much junk (horns, guitars, drums, keyboards, everything) that the musicians barely have room to be on stage.  It’s quite interesting.  This is a video of them live performing one of my favorite songs from their first album. Yukihiro Takahashi sings lead vocals on this one. He’s gotta be like a million years old by now. The lyrics saying, “is this the way how it’s supposed to be…” is a question I ask myself every freakin day!

No dance music, beautiful blond bitches with boob jobs, plastic surgery patients, fat black lady singers screaming over top, or great stage show here folks, just good music being played by talented people (something that is sorely lost on today’s music purchasing public). Imagine this in music! Real live harmonies and the thing I love the most … sustained droning electric guitars. This stuff sticks to my ear like glue, and somehow makes me happy with all the bullshit going on in my pathetic life.

Either way, be rest assured this is getting high rotation on WMOM.

Enjoy some Dreaming Pupa (and laugh at the name like I do!) It’s Burt Bacharach meets the Japanese!!

CtrlZStudio Podcast Numero Duero!!

Sorry folks this was a week late in posting.  I had to listen to the whole thing the whole way through and clean it up!

Here it is in all it’s glory:

  • More angst toward BP
  • space weather that matters
  • chicken news
  • rehomo update
  • phone a friend
  • ctrlzstudio cafeteria menu
  • Hans and conspiracy theories
  • and tons of audio stupidity and silliness for your enjoyment.

Sound quality is ‘eh… so so’ but … the point is there (whatever that may be).

In summary, listen to a recording of a bunch of people having a good time bullshitting.

Podcast participants this time are:  Bitchin Bob, Chad, Mysterious Denise, South Philly Sammy, Will, Mark ‘the meat whisperer’, Birthday Brenty, Johnny D, and Glorious Greg.
