Gay Pride Reality Check

“Gay” is a sexuality.

IT’S THE WAY YOU HAVE SEX! It’s not dressing as a woman and lip syncing.  It’s not dance music.  It’s not spending money on frivolous travel and fashion and bullshit.

It’s HOW YOU FUCK!  That’s it!  All this other stuff is just bullshit.

I think gay pride sends the wrong message to people who feel they might be gay, but don’t enjoy dance music or drag queens or all that bullshit.  This could cause someone to be ashamed or offended by their own sexual identity.  What about the people who do not enjoy that bullshit and do not appreciate being represented by these popular culture “gay” things (drag queens, dance music, consumerism).

Is this a sensible, fair, and valid argument?

  1. I blame TV. Most of the LGBT community that started these pride events, and what they stood for, died out in the 80’s, early 90’s. Then in the late 90’s, early 2000’s “gay” culture really began to take off in mainstream TV-their ideals of what, who, and how gay men should act and what music they should listen to, etc. A generation grew up seeing this as perceived normality. When in fact, it was an exaggerated ideal of what it was to be gay. A generation of wisdom died out with the AIDS epidemic. The only avenue to probably a vast amount of young people was and still is popular culture.

But what the fuck do I know. I’m a middle aged married straight woman who loves drag queens, dance music, and consumerism on occasion. 😉

  2. We all know (reportedly) that Oscar Wilde was flamboyant. Perhaps the archetype “gay” has been with us since the Greeks or earlier. I have always felt I’m an outsider in a minority.
