Nothing Like Good Disaster Coverage: The Sinking of The Costa Concordia

Tis the season to stay in and watch stuff, because it’s so damn cold, what else can you do!

I stumbled over this movie/tv show/documentary whatever about the cell phone footage of passengers and crew of the ill fated Costa Concordia. Well worth the 47 minutes of time, it is definitely worth the watch. I think the captain of this ship is the text book definition of pussy.

After watching, tell me if you are thinking about booking a cruise any time soon! (NOTE: I wouldn’t be surprised if this was yanked off of youtube tomorrow. I downloaded it to archive. I’m surprised this is even present on the youtube site, so watch it while you can).

Some of the best and craziest jazz ever.  These guys were one of the first to DIGITALLY record music (at the birth of the Compact Disc).

This is a video of them doing the song “Toy Chest”.

 

I have almost every one of their albums (at least I did on cassette and some on CD).

Some of the most whistle’able tunes ever created. Guaranteed, if you listen to any of their music, you will whistle or hum it immediately after you hear it. The musicianship is astounding but the song writing is sooooooooooo sticky.

It’s also fun to watch the videos as they are such a time piece. Notice the old IBM PC AT and the first generation Macintosh behind keyboardist Billy Barber. This song is “Sideman”. Also notice how sticky the melodies are on these songs. Its like a drug!

…also couldn’t forget the song “funhouse” (so glad someone posted these on youtube).

This song stuck in my head so much, I couldn’t rest until I could at least FAKE the main theme of this song on a keyboard. It’s not that hard, but my god does the melody stick. Intoxicating!!!

Listen and get infected.
(and the sad part is. I still cant find all of their music on the internet 🙁 ) You can hear most, if not all, of their music on WMOM (of course).

Let’s see where we are now….   A whole new congress under new republican power.

Let us now review where we were 6 years ago (2008) (according to Independent Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders):

  1. Healthcare only for the rich
  2. Two wars going on (losing combat troops every week).
  3. More people living in poverty than anytime in American history.
  4. More wealth inequality.
  5. Financial system on verge of collapse.
  6. Losing 700,000 jobs a month
  7. 1.4 Trillion dollar deficit (the largest in history).

What the new republican congress will do:

  1. Go after social security (privatize).
  2. Go after Medicare (de-fund).
  3. Major cuts in federal education aid.
  4. Major cuts in nutrition aid.
  5. Major cuts in environmental protection.
  6. Huge tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations.

What a wonderful world to look forward to.   Go ahead, ask me why I shorten my life by smoking!
